Per the June 2 CalMessage sent to the UC Berkeley campus community, bCourses course(s) sites for academic courses older than seven years in which anyone has a Teacher, Lead TA, or TA role are scheduled to be removed from the platform in June 2028.

Starting July 18, 2026, instructors may notice a slightly new design to the Speedgrader interface in bCourses. This update from the vendor (Instructure Canvas) focuses primarily on backend improvements for high-enrollment courses, such as faster load times and increased stability.
In addition to upgrades to the backend technology, instructors will also see the following minor UI changes when using Speedgrader.

On July 14, 2026, an updated Turnitin End-User License Agreement (EULA) takes effect. All end users (instructors and students) will be prompted to accept the updated EULA when they next log in to Turnitin on or after July 14, 2026. These updates remain subject to UC Berkeley’s Master Registration Agreement (MRA) with Turnitin, data protection terms, and UC Terms & Conditions.

bCourses is now back online following a cybersecurity incident affecting Canvas, our learning management system vendor. The platform has been restored, though some users may experience intermittent performance issues with tools and apps connected to bCourses.
bCourses users do not need to take any further action at this time.

Pronouns in bCourses Display Now Live
As part of the Gender Recognition and Lived Name Policy, as of January 8, 2026, pronouns now display for users in bCourses who have opted to share them. Pronouns are sourced from official campus systems of record (CalCentral and/or UC Path) and will automatically be updated in bCourses in the same way that lived names are synced.

Starting for the Spring 2026 semester, instructors can use a new feature in bCourses called Discussion Checkpoints to set multiple due dates for graded discussions.

RTL was made aware during Summer 2025 that Kaltura had inadvertently deleted or rendered unplayable a subset of Kaltura media files that had been created prior to 2022.

RTL is changing the way the Zoom to Kaltura integration works. Starting on January 6, 2026, Zoom cloud recordings will be copied to Kaltura *only* for users that have indicated that they need this integration to continue to function in order to accomplish their instructional goals.

My Media in bCourses (and in Mediaspace) now provides a "Recycle Bin" feature that allows you to delete media you own with an option to restore later (within 30 days of being deleted). If you don’t want to wait 30 days for media to be fully and permanently deleted, it’s just a few steps to go into the Recycle Bin and delete from there.
